Large aquarium is required to keep the Flowerforn fish. It should be more than 3 feet long. The most common and recommended is a 4 feet long aquarium.
It is advisable to have a colourful background for your tank, which at the same time will create a great scenery which will make it more natural. Lightings of your aquarium also play an important role in making the flowerhorn more beautiful. The light will reflect to your fish and generates the colour of your fish. The best light setting is by letting your aquarium exposed to the sunlight which is also known as the u.v light, because Flowerhorn will gives its natural colour in the present of UV. Thus, make your fish feels like home (in the river). However, the disadvantage of exposing your aquarium to sunlight is the algae will tend to grow fast and will make the tank water dirty.
The use of small stone and marble for decoration is not advisable as the fish may eat them. use the fish house(castle, ship wreck) that is available at the pet shop and u also can use the plastic water plant to make your aquarium look even more natural. Avoid to use the living water plant because it will become the food for the fish and when the plant die it will make the water of the aquarium dirty.
The best temperature of the water to keep the Flowerhorn is around 28-32c. This temperature will make your fish healthy and active. If the temperature is too low it will make your fish less active and it will easily get sick.
It is advisable to use overhead filter than using the genarator pump, as it only produces bubbles and does not filter the water. Change the water and clean the aquarium, once a week. But if you are a lazy person, twice a month is acceptable =) when you change the water, throw out only about 75% of it and refill the tank with new fresh water. The reason why we dont throw all of it because the bacteria in the remaining water is very useful to the fish. when adding new fresh water dont forget to add anti-cholrine solution this is to reduce the amount of cholrine in the water.
Flowerhorn fish eats almost everything. Flowerhorn is not fussy in term of food. It can be carnivore and herbivore. Based on my experience, it also eats their own species.
The best food for the Flowerhorn is shrimp. Shrimp is very nutritious and contains large amount of protein, which make will the Flowerhorn grows even faster. The skin of the shrimp contains carotenoid, which gives nutrient to the skin of the fish. Flowerhorn loves to eat shrimp, either live shrimp or freeze dried shrimp. Live shrimp is more advisable, because it is fresh. Freeze dried shrimp contains some factorial chemical which is not suitable for your fish.
Another nutritious food is bloodworms. Bloodworm is red in colour and very small in size. It is packed and kept under frozen condition and are available at the pet shop. Flowerhorn also loves to eat any small fish, especially the Gold fish. Gold fish contains high amount of fat. However, it is difficult for the Flowerhorn to catch the fish since it is small and fast, even faster than shrimp. So it will take time for the Flowerhorn to eat just one Gold fish.
Pellets are highly nutritious for the Flowerhorn. It is healthy and can be obtained easily from nearby pet shop. It is highly recommended by the fish experts, since it is a balance diet for the fish. The best pellets foods recommended are Banli Sakura Flowerhorn food, Tetra luo han and Grand sumo Flowerhorn food.
Other Foods such as brine shrimp, red worm, dried worm, etc.
There are 3 features you should take account before buying the Flowerhorn fish.
One of the Flowerhorn feature is their forehead or "nuchal hump". Only Flowerhorn fish have a nuchal hump on the head. Chinese believe that the hump will bring luck and prosperity to the owner. The bigger the hump, the luckier the owner will get. So, dont be silly choosing the Flowerhorn with the small hump=P. Male Flowerhorn have much bigger hump compare to the female.small and young Flowerhorn will obviously have smaller hump compare to the adult Flowerhorn.
when choosing Flowerhorn, you should look at the one which has an intense and bright colour. There are many different colours and bases of Flowerhorn species. Don't pick the one which is pale and dull. The "Pearl" on the Flowerhorn scale should also be considered. the more the pearls the better it is. These pearls make the Flowerhorn shiny and stunning.
In the other word, it is called "flower" among the fish lovers. These marks are black in colour and the lining horizontally on the scale of the fish. Each Flowerhorn only has a maximum * Flowers on its scale lining from its tail to its head. some Flowerhorn will resemble its Flower as chinese characters. Some people belief that this flower also bring luck to the owner=)
Different grades of Flowerhorn may arise due to its Flower. Grade A will have a maximum of 8 flowers. If it is less than 8 Flowers, it may be either grade B or grade C. If the Flowers are fully extends from the tail to its gill, it is definitely the highest grade which is Grade AA.
